As our clients look for ways of increasing efficiencies in their everyday business or seeking out those new opportunities that will increase market share, revenue, profit and time to value. We have repeatedly seen an underlying problem for organisation striving to achieve their goals.

These clients do not always recognise the route of their problem but clearly experience the results of them daily. A well known example is that dreaded board meeting where two or more directors are reporting different figures for what should be the same data. Well the transaction data is the same, but each department has decided to publish their own reference and master data covering the definitions of Territory, Product, Unit of Sale etc together with differing priorities within their own published hierarchies.

Clearly Business Intelligence has a place to help synchronise the thinking but the BI contribution is to fix it after the fact and often enforce a policy of a definition that is not agreed by all parties.

Instead we propose that BI along with other applications including operational should have access to the same definitions and collaborate on the content, such as Territory, Product, Unit of Sale etc as well as their priority in agreed hierarchies.

Lets state right now that helping fix this issue is more that software, but with the right software we feel the process of building the organisation to support an efficient Data Governance practice to support the needs of the business is made all the easier.

Above all the software choice should reflect the complete flexibility of the organisation and not just one particular department or business unit. Above all Master and Reference data is shared and by definition having multiple versions of is a contradiction. Therefore we propose an open and model driven architecture, building on standards for data definitions such as XML.Schema and the provision of a rich user experience in the management of the data itself.
